OpenStack is an open and scalable operating system for building public and private clouds. It provides both large and small organizations an alternative to closed cloud environments, reducing the risks of lock-in associated with proprietary platforms. OpenStack offers flexibility and choice through a highly engaged community of over 6,000 individuals and over 190 companies including Cisco, Rackspace®, Dell, IBM, and Red Hat®.
The OpenStack Compute is designed to provision and manage large networks of virtual machines, creating a redundant and scalable cloud computing platform. It provides the software, APIs and control panels required to orchestrate a cloud environment, including running instances, managing networks, and controlling access through users and projects. OpenStack Compute strives to be both hardware- and hypervisor-agnostic, and supports a variety of hardware configurations and major hypervisors.
The OpenStack Image Service provides discovery, registration and delivery services for disk and server images. The ability to copy or snapshot a server image and immediately store it away is a powerful capability of the OpenStack cloud operating system. Stored images can be used as a template to get new servers up and running quickly and more consistently if you are provisioning multiple servers than installing a server operating system and individually configuring additional services. It can also be used to store and catalog an unlimited number of backups.
The OpenStack Object Storage provides redundant, scalable object storage using clusters of standardized servers. OpenStack Storage scales to store petabytes of data, making it well suited to handle virtual machine images, photo storage, email storage and backup archiving inexpensively, through data replication and distribution across commodity hard drives.
As powerful as the OpenStack software is, we know firsthand it takes a lot more than software to properly design, deploy, and operate a cloud at scale. Fast Lane is delivering hands-on training courses for OpenStack developers and administrators. The Initial course covers the fundamentals of setting up, administering, and troubleshooting OpenStack clouds, all with real-world situations in a training lab environment.
